Ann Eberstadt Cannell

January 24, 1928 — April 28, 2023

Ann Eberstadt Cannell passed away on April 29 at age 95.

Ann was the daughter of Ferdinand Eberstadt, a merchant banker active in government service during and after World War II, and Mary Eberstadt. She grew up in New York City, where she attended The Brearley School (Class of 1945), and Target Rock Farm on Lloyd’s Neck, Long Island.

Ann was married to Peter Cannell for seventy-three years. They met on the beach in Bay Head, N.J. while she was a student at Bryn Mawr College. After their wedding, in 1950, they lived briefly in Paris and then New York. They moved to Locust Valley, N.Y. in 1990. Along the way they raised five children: William, Peter, Cynthia, Michael and Carlo. Ann was a devoted mother, but also host and caregiver to numerous dogs and family friends.

Ann spent summers at Point O’ Woods, on Fire Island, and later Ketchum, Idaho. Her shelves contained a clutter of trophies, plunder from seasons full of tennis tournaments. She was a spirited figure skater, swimmer, skier — but more than anything a tennis player. For many years she delivered backhands with a cigarette clenched in her teeth.

She was also a hiker. At age 80 she marked the seventh anniversary of 9/11 with a ten-mile solo hike to Pioneer Cabin, a demanding uphill climb in the mountains above Sun Valley, Idaho.

She was a member of the River Club, Colony Club, Hillsboro Club, Piping Rock Club and the North Country Garden Club.

She is survived by her husband, Peter, four children, nine grandchildren and five great grandchildren.

On Ann’s 80th birthday Peter acknowledged the many things he knew nothing about — swap spreads, convertible bonds payable and qualified longevity annuity contracts. “But I do know one thing,” he said. “I know about love. Because of Annie.”
