Christopher J. Poppe, Jr.

March 23, 1947 — October 3, 2023

Surrounded by his loving family, with Jimmy Buffet and The Beach Boys playing in the background, Christopher J Poppe left on the Margaritaville Express, Catching a Wave as he entered the Pearly Gates on Tuesday October 3, 2023, just in time for a Cheeseburger in Paradise.

Chris was predeceased by his parents, Jack and Evelyn and sister Lorraine. He leaves behind his beloved wife of 54 years, Pat, his children, Christopher (Katherine), Kyle (Christina), Cathlyn (Ryan), his sister Barbara (Ted) and the Sensational Six: Christopher, Ryan, Grace, Anne, Gavin, and McKenna, the Grand Kids.

Chris was born in Brooklyn, New York, raised in Baldwin and resided in Lynbrook and Sea Cliff.

Growing up, he was an outstanding basketball player, both at the high school and collegiate levels, he was an ocean lifeguard for both Breezy Point and the Town of Hempstead, and he spent his career as a dedicated Police Officer and Detective in the Nassau County Police Department.

He was an avid runner and golfer for many years. Many remember him as an outstanding coach for CYO basketball, softball, and Little League. He received the Man of the Year Award from the Catholic Youth Organization due to his dedication to their programs.

Chris loved the beach, traveling with his young family, and ‘getting a feel for the area’ wherever he journeyed.

Once retired, he and Pat enjoyed The Hammocks and Boca Grande in the winter and Southold in the summer. However, the time spent with the grandchildren was probably, for him, the best times of all.

Chris will be remembered for his gentleness, kindness, smile, and love of family. And his strength through decades of illness is a model for us all. His life is a cause for celebration. May he rest in the arms of Our Lord.

Now left the day just slip away.

So the dark night may watch over you

Velvet blue, silent, true

It embraces your heart and your soul

Nocturne.

Never cry never sigh

You don’t have to wonder why

Always be, always seeing

Come and dream the night with me.

Nocturne
