Daniel George Nelligan

d. September 18, 2021

Dan, aka Deli Dan, began a long career in food service during his teenage years, working for various delis and eventually becoming a co-owner of several with his brother-in-law Michael Caramico. The Port Washington deli is where he encountered Helen Keller National Center (HKNC) staff in Sands Point - sparking an interest in learning sign language. He then continued his career and became their Food Service Director. His vocation in foodservice took him working between NY and Florida (another deli with Michael, serving as management in a Florida Jail System and SUNY Cobleskill), eventually settling back in NY. He resumed his position at HKNC as the beloved Food Service Director, retiring in 2020.
Dan is survived by his loving mother: Helen Nelligan; brother: Thomas Nelligan; and much-loved sisters: Lynn Mastromano (Chris), Barbara Caramico (Michael), and Joni Hopkins (Eric). Uncle Danny (the favorite uncle) loved and was a best friend to all his nephews and nieces: Wayne Faltin, Christopher Caramico*, Joseph Caramico, Maria Klino, JT Xenos, Paul Mastromano, Ashlee Mastromano, Rebekah Hopkins, and Abigail Hopkins. In his spare time, Dan loved cooking and fishing. You could always find a fishing pole in the back of his car, ready to make a quick stop. Danny had a great sense of humor and never spoke an unkind word to anyone. He was always there when you needed him, and he loved spending time with all his family and their dogs. His cherished dog Bitsy, while alive, never left his side.
