Dinko Zgaljic

Dinko Zgaljic passed away at home on March 5, 2024 at the age of 96. Beloved husband of the late Anna Zgaljic (Tkalec). Loving father of Mary Ann, (Michael) and Helen (Milan). Cherished Dede of Stephanie, Bobby and Anna. Beloved great grandfather of Mia and Mateo.

He was born in Selo Linardici on Otok Krk in Croatia on July 31, 1927. He escaped Yugoslavia in a small rowboat with four friends, and by the grace of God they arrived in Italy where his journey for a better life began. He eventually came to Canada, where he met the love of his life Anna,they were happily married for 62 for years. They worked very hard, saved as much money as they could and bought their first home in 1961 in Astoria New York.

He was an auto mechanic by trade, called himself a grease monkey but we told him he was much more than that. He became a successful businessman in real estate. He helped family and friends that migrated from the old county, many of them lived in his apartment building in the 1960's. We have so memories of the get togethers in the building which included his homemade vino and rakija, singing and telling stories about the old country. He loved telling funny stories about the good old days.

He enjoyed traveling back to the old country to visit his parents and taught us about his life growing during the war. He enjoyed his retirement by always finding something to fix around the house. He enjoyed fishing and watching his grandchildren grow up. He loved his winter home on Marco Island where he would fish off his dock and complain when he only caught catfish. He was a humble good man with a strong faith in God. He ended his conversations by saying "sve najbolje" a/k/a "all the best".
