Doris Adele Sommerfeld, 87, died on January 14, 2015 of natural causes.
She was born November 26, 1927, in Brooklyn, NY to Martha Haroldsen Johnson and Edward Fredrick Johnson. She graduated as the valedictorian of her class at Andrew Jackson High School in Queens in 1945. She attended Queens College, graduating with a bachelor's degree in mathematics in 1949. As a student, she served as recording secretary on the student council and secretary on the student-faculty committee. She was also a member of the Lutheran Club and Beta Sigma Omicron sorority.
Doris married Albert A. Sommerfeld on May 22, 1949. She earned a master's degree from Queens in 1953 and taught mathematics at Sewanhaka High School in Floral Park, NY, and also worked as a home tutor for students who were ill or otherwise unable to attend school.
After her children were born, she stopped working outside the home but remained active in the community. Doris was a member of Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Glen Head, where she served as coordinator of the prayer chain. She was very involved with the church's women's group, helping to organize the annual Christmas boutique, make quilts for Lutheran World Relief, and assist with many church dinners and other events. She was also active in the Glen Head Women's Club and a longtime member of the Nassau County Historical Society. She and her husband attended performances of the New York City Opera for many years, and they enjoyed going to a wide variety of concerts around Long Island.
While Doris was an only child, she had a large extended family with many cousins with whom she maintained active ties, some as far away as Norway. She was preceded in death by her husband, Albert A. Sommerfeld. She is survived by her son Bill, his wife Renee, and their daughter Anna; her daughter Meg and husband Jay Matson, and their daughters Madeline and Abigail.
