Eric Thomas Lobben, age 67, of Glen Head, NY, passed away unexpectedly but peacefully on Sunday January 5th, in the comfort of his home.
Born on August 31, 1957 in Queens, Eric was the son of Arne and Frances Lobben, and elder brother to Kathleen Lobben and Margaret Bosco. Growing up in Huntington Station, he finished 2nd in his class at Walt Whitman High School before attending and graduating from Princeton University in the Class of ‘79, with a degree in Electrical Engineering & Computer Science. Eric went on to receive his Masters Degree in Business Administration from NYU Stern and had a successful 25-year career as a finance professional with Bankers Trust and Deutsche Bank, later transitioning to private investing in order to spend more time with his family. In 2022 he took on a Senior Financial Management role at Boston-based Construction firm, DC Beane and Associates, allowing him to work alongside his son, Michael.
In 1986, Eric married Maria Campos, with whom he shared 38 wonderful and loving years of marriage. Together, they moved from New York City to Glen Head in 1993, embedding themselves in the local community and raising five children who remain their pride and joy. Eric’s life was not without hardship, as he was diagnosed with Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia (CLL) in 1998. With the support of loved ones, strong faith, and great medical care, he lived with cancer for the next 26 years. Additionally, in 2001, while working across the street from the World Trade Center, Eric managed to escape the 9/11 attacks unharmed, while also providing assistance and transport to strangers in need.
Eric was well-read, passionate, and would gladly talk with anyone about economic markets, New York sports, science & technology, current events, and global affairs. He loved competition and contrary to his own belief, was a natural born athlete. He played basketball as a teenager and later in the NY Bank League, as well as volleyball for both Princeton and NYU. He would eventually pick up golf and pickleball, transforming into the ultimate sports-dad. He enjoyed puzzles, was personally frugal but socially generous, a vocal advocate of lifelong self-education and hard work, and fiercely independent. Above all, he cherished his immediate and extended family, and the opportunity to build a home to enrich their lives and support their endeavors.
Eric is survived by his adoring wife Maria, their five children and their growing families; Thomas & Marissa with Felicity (7), Foster (5) and Mercer (2), Catherine and Jon Steller with Josette (2), Michael and Kate with Rose (9mos), Erik and Cassidy, and Kirsten, as well as his loving sisters Kathleen, Peggy and their families. Eric was preceded in death by his mother and father, Frances and Arne Lobben.
