Jak Nesim Albukerk, M.D., 82 years old, devoted husband, father, and grandfather, passed away on November 13, 2016 following a long, progressively debilitating illness. Dr. Albukerk was a pathologist at Southside Hospital for 27 years, clinical professor at SUNY Stony Brook School of Medicine and Deputy Medical Examiner in Suffolk County. Later he was Medical Director for Icon Laboratories. Dr. Albukerk's research focused on liver disease. He was active with Nassau and Suffolk Counties Pathology Societies and Trustee of Suffolk Academy of Medicine.
Dr. Albukerk was born in Istanbul, Turkey. Following graduation from a Jewish primary school, French Catholic secondary school, St. Michel, and Istanbul University medical school, he served in the Turkish army before immigrating to the US to continue his education. He completed his residency at Cincinnati General Hospital and fellowship at New York University Hospital. Jak was foremost devoted to family and always had a keen interest in classical and jazz music, fine and performing arts, and travel. Dr. Albukerk is survived by his wife of 52 years, Lynne Drucker Albukerk, son Nick (Nico) and daughter-in-law Tali, son Laurence (Dov) and daughter-in-law Tania, daughter Lisa, 5 grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and many cousins.
