Joanna Canadeo

Joanna Canadeo of Mill Pond Acres, Port Washington, NY passed away on January 13, 2023, after a long illness. She was the loving wife of 64 years to Louis Canadeo (d. 2019) and mother to Donna Tuman and Anne Canadeo. The sister of Henry Cavaliere and Marion Giordano (deceased). She was a devoted grandmother to Alyssa Cianciulli, Douglas Tuman, Anna Tuman and Katherine Vibbert; and great-grandmother to Avery Toscano, Frania Tuman and Grace Cook.

Joanna had an irrepressible personality and boundless energy, which was well suited to her career as an account executive in newspaper advertising. But her first love was painting and fashion design. She returned to school after her children were grown and attended the Fashion Institute of Technology and SUNY Old Westbury, where she graduated with a bachelor’s degree in fine art. As an assistant to the sculptor, Carol Furman, she handled communications and publicity and worked in the studio. In her retirement, she continued to study drawing and painting, and exhibited her work with the Port Washington Art League.

Joanna’s creativity extended to the kitchen with delicious results. One of her greatest pleasures was cooking and baking for her family. No recipe was too challenging for her to tackle, though Italian dishes were her trademark. Many were published in a food column she wrote for The Gold Coast Gazette. She traveled throughout Europe and the Caribbean with her husband, Louis and often, with their friends. An active member of Saint Mary’s Church in Roslyn, she taught catechism for over ten years. She leaves behind a grateful extended family and community that will miss her deeply.

Funeral Mass Tuesday, Jan. 17, 10 am at St Mary’s Church, Roslyn, NY.

Interment to follow at Holy Rood Cemetery, Westbury, NY.
