On July 18, 2018, John Thomas Bertrand passed away in his beautiful home in Glen Head, New
York under the loving care of his devoted wife Carol and family. John lived a truly meaningful
and joyous life which he celebrated every day. Raised in Beechhurst, New York, one of nine
children, John was a true New Yorker throughout his life. John had a lifelong appreciation for
his Catholic education at St. Luke's Grammar School and All Hallows High School in the Bronx.
He was a graduate of St. John's University while becoming an Operating Engineer. John had a
tremendous love for the ocean. He spent many memorable years on the west end of Long Beach
where he courted the love of his life, Carol Rose Maloney, a flight attendant for American
Airlines. John and Carol were happily married on March 30, 1968 and just celebrated their 50th
wedding anniversary. They reside in Glen Head, N.Y. where they raised their three children
Bess (husband Jim Wagner), John (wife Hope Bertrand), and Eileen (husband Brian Knapp).
After many years as a crane operator for the Union of Operating Engineers, Local 14/14B in
Flushing, John remained dedicated to the trade as a union delegate and a lobbyist during the
Reagan Administration. John's greatest devotion was to his family.
For the past 25 years, John reveled in being a grandfather as well as his love of sailing with
Carol, family and dear friends in scenic Hempstead Harbor on his treasured boat, Halcyon. John
loved his beautiful grandchildren Madeleine, Jack and Brooke Bertrand, Katie, Brian and Kelly
Knapp, and Hagan, Connor and Emma Wagner. John will always be remembered as a generous,
loving and faithful man whose mission was to always do the right thing. God Bless John
Bertrand, the love of our lives.
