Joseph R. Fichtl passed away peacefully on April 16th, 2023. He was born on May 10, 1933, in the Bronx, NY, the only son of Joseph B. and Mary A. Fichtl. He graduated from New York University, where he was goalie for the NYU soccer team. He then served in the United States Army. In his youth, he enjoyed racing cars and playing baseball. His love for cars and baseball continued throughout his life, maintaining his father’s beloved 1948 Packard for fifty years and watching the New York Yankees play in the Bronx as a twenty-year season ticket holder.
In 1956, Joseph married Elaine M. Fichtl (nee Recca). They established residency in Howard Beach and had three children: Sherin, Chris and Todd. In 1968, he and his family moved to Glen Cove, and have remained on the North Shore, living in Lattingtown for two decades, and most recently, Sea Cliff. In his retirement years, he would spend many afternoons smoking his favorite cigars at Lattingtown Beach and frequenting local restaurants, where he always made friends. His greatest joy was his children, and later, his grandchildren. He cherished the moments he spent with family, traveling on vacation, going to the movies, watching sporting events and having BBQs in the backyard. Those who knew him have many fond memories and stories to share. He will forever be loved and missed.
Joseph’s professional career extended over fifty years, all within the wire and cable industry. He would often say that if you want to be successful, you must have an ability to build meaningful relationships and earn trust. Those were skills he demonstrated throughout his professional and personal life. His last job was an executive with Mohawk/Cable Design Technologies, which provided leading technology for network communications, fiber optics and next generation voice and data capabilities. In 2004, Joseph along with a team of executives, coordinated the sale of the business to Belden Corporation, with the newly formed company operating as Belden/CDT today.
Joseph is predeceased by his devoted parents and daughter, Sherin. He is survived by his loving wife Elaine and sons, Chris (Alissa) and Todd (Heather). He is also survived by seven wonderful grandchildren: Christopher, Chloe, Ethan, Ty, Cade, Kyle and Coty.
The family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks and appreciation to the staff at Glen Cove Rehab and Glen Cove Hospital for their loving care and kindness.
