Larry Herbig

John Lawrence "Larry" Herbig, age 80 of Bayville, N.Y. passed away peacefully at home on Monday, February 12, 2024.

Larry is survived by his wife, Suzanne, son Edward (Barbara), daughter Julie Heiss (the late David), daughter Cheryl Buchan (Kenneth), son John, as well as 12 grandchildren, Kelly, Brian, Emily, Sean, Kyle, Brittany, Brandon, Jack, Annalee, Scott, Kate, Liam and great granddaughters Reid and Eleanor. Also, survived by sister Leslie Reilly and nephews Thomas, John and Brian and their families.

Larry grew up in Glen Cove, spending much of his time outdoors, so it wasn't surprising when Larry decided to make fishing his livelihood. In fact, Larry was a was a pioneer in the lobster fishing industry on Long Island Sound. He was successful and well respected. Many of Larry's summer weekends were spent boating and water skiing with his family. Larry was an award-winning skeet shooter. He was a long-time member of the Mill River Rod and Gun Club, Bayville Sportsman's Club and Peconic River Sportsman's Club. Larry was an avid hunter and spent much of his time later in life hunting on his property in Shushan, N.Y. He also took pleasure in maintaining and educating his children and grandchildren about the outdoors. After he retired, Larry enjoyed watching his grandchildren's sporting events. Larry will be missed by all who knew him.

Visitation on Thursday, February 15, from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Whitting Funeral Home, 300 Glen Cove Ave., Glen Head, NY 11545.

Funeral Mass on Friday, February 16, at 10:00 AM at St. Gertrude's Catholic Church at 28 School St., Bayville, N.Y. A burial will follow at Locust Valley Cemetery at 117 Ryefield Rd., Locust Valley, NY.
