Peter B. Cannell

May 8, 1926 — November 15, 2023

Peter B. Cannell passed away on November 15 at age 97.

Peter was born May 8, 1926, in Glen Ridge, New Jersey, where he was a member of Christ Episcopal Church. He attended the Glen Ridge public schools where he was treasurer of his class and captain of the tennis team. For three summers he attended Camp Dudley on Lake Champlain.

In July 1944 Peter became a cadet midshipman at the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy at King’s Point, New York. During the war he served aboard merchant ships assigned to the Murmansk run, among the most dangerous routes. Following the war, he worked for the Marshall Plan in Paris. He graduated from Princeton in 1949.

The following June Peter married Ann Eberstadt. They had five children: William, Peter, Cynthia, Michael and Carlo.

From 1951 to 1954, Peter worked as a copywriter at the advertising agency BBDO. In 1955, he joined his father-in-law’s investment banking firm, F. Eberstadt & Co., where he served as a securities analyst, head of institutional research and, eventually, president and CEO of Chemical Fund, Inc., a mutual fund managed by Eberstadt.

Over the years Peter was an associate editor of the Financial Analysts Journal, a director of Engelhard Minerals & Chemicals Corp., Horizons, Inc., Tipperary Land and Exploration, Vivienne Woodward Corp., and Wertheim Asset Management. In 1973, Peter founded Peter B. Cannell & Co., an investment

management firm.

Peter also served as a director of the Fountain House Foundation, the Allergy Foundation and for many years acted as a trustee of Hurricane Island Outward Bound School. He was a long-time member of the Recess Club, River Club, Hillsboro Club, Princeton Club, Links Club and Piping Rock Club. In addition, he was member of the board of managers of the Hospital for Special Surgery for eighteen years.

In 1958, Peter and Ann bought a house at Point O’ Woods, on Fire Island. That house is now owned by his daughter, Cynthia Gross. Two sons, Michael and Carlo, have their own homes at Point O’ Woods. Ann and Peter lived in New York City for thirty years. Thirty-five years ago they built a home on Peacock Point, in Lattingtown, Long Island. They have since resided in Matinecock Farms, in Glen Cove.

He is survived by four children, ten grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
