Richard David Egan, 86, of Glen Cove, New York passed away on February 1st, 2023.
His funeral service will be held on Monday, February 6, at 11:00 AM in Glen Head at St. Hyacinth’s Roman Catholic Church, his longtime parish.
Richard was born in Greenpoint, Brooklyn to Anne and Maurice Egan on September 1, 1936. He was the eldest of four children. As a child, he helped his father run his corner store by delivering groceries to neighborhood customers. Here Richard loved playing stickball and punchball in the street with his friends and was an enthusiastic fan of the Brooklyn Dodgers, even attending their games at Ebbets Field. He also delighted in watching matinees at the local movie theaters. In Greenpoint, Richard attended St. Anthony’s School and Catholic Church, and he later graduated from Long Island City High School.
Richard began his banking career at Manufacturer’s Hanover where he was a loyal and hardworking employee in various locations for nearly 40 years until his retirement in 1992 from the bank’s then-name of Chemical Bank.
In 1978, Richard married Doris Eichler of Greenpoint. The following year, they welcomed daughter, Jeanne. In 1983, Richard and Doris relocated to Glen Cove, and, in 1985, they welcomed another daughter, Marian.
After his retirement, Richard took on various volunteer roles for his church and his children’s school board, advising them on financial matters. Richard also spent much time dutifully taking care of and providing frequent transportation for various elderly relatives in the family. He was active in his children’s school carpool
and in helping Doris to maintain their home.
An avid music fan, Richard took great pleasure in compiling and listening to a vast catalogue of Big Band favorites and the Great American Songbook. A constant learner and lifelong sports fan, he also enjoyed reading, monitoring the financial markets, following the news and rooting on the New York Mets and Giants. Richard always maintained a positive spirit, and even when his teams failed to win, he’d hopefully respond “Maybe next year.”
Richard was a quiet and generous man who never sought the limelight. He did not buy himself anything. Richard treated others with respect and accepted people as they were. He was a dutiful son, devoted husband, and loving father who always provided for and protected his family and was a consistent source of support and strength for others. Richard had bright blue eyes and a disarming smile. Richard’s insightful wit and fondness for spontaneous puns brought joy to his family. His lifelong dedication to faith, family and education served as a model to his children.
Richard faced life with stoicism and equanimity even in the midst of various health ailments in his later years. Without a complaint, Richard bravely carried on with fortitude and maintained his positive outlook with his catchphrase “Keep smiling.”
Richard is survived by his cherished wife of 44 years, Doris, his beloved daughters Jeanne (along with her husband John) and Marian as well as Richard’s younger sister, Catherine Martorano. He was preceded in death by his parents Anne and Maurice Egan, brother Michael Egan and sister Maureen Gelardi. Richard will be sorely missed and fondly remembered.
