Samuel "Mickey" Benchimol, a devoted husband, father, and grandfather, passed away peacefully on March 29, 2025, at the age of 93.
A man of resilience and adventure, Mickey lived a life filled with purpose, passion, and an unwavering spirit. Born in Argentina, Mickey immigrated to the United States in 1951. Shortly after, he met Nancy, and they married on August 10, 1963, building a beautiful life together.
Mickey was a proud veteran of the Korean War. After discharge from the Army, Mickey worked for the US Postal Service and then went on to own and operate Three Guys Luncheonette in Brooklyn. He retired at the age of 54, embracing a life of adventure and community. He served as Scoutmaster for Boy Scout Troop 195 and was a founding member of the North Shore Soccer Club. Mickey often said “You can’t control where you are born but you can determine where you live” and was proud of his American citizenship. An avid outdoorsman, Mickey hiked some of the most challenging trails in North America, from Mount Washington to the Sierra Nevadas, the Appalachians, and beyond. A passionate runner, he completed ten marathons, including the New York City Marathon. Soccer was another great love of his—first as a player and later as a referee, staying involved in the sport well into his later years. He was an avid fan of the Argentina National Team and was excited to celebrate their World Cup Victory 2022.
Mickey is remembered by his family. His wife Nancy Benchimol; his daughter, Elizabeth Hegarty (Mike); his sons Michael Benchimol (Kelli), John Benchimol (Jen), and Peter Benchimol. He is preceded in death by his beloved daughter-in-law Bernadette Benchimol. Mickey was the proud grandfather to Caitlin (John), Casey(Sarah), Erin, Abby (Michael), Michael, Julian(Annie), Ryan, Mikaela, Megan, James, Jake and Evelyn, and three great-grandchildren (Harrison, Sasha and Sofia).
He leaves behind a lifetime of memories, stories, and an example of how to embrace life to the fullest. Visitation at Whitting Funeral Home Thursday, April 3, 2025, 2-4 PM and 7-9 PM.
