John Harris Sasson
Long-time Glen Cove resident, John H. Sasson of Brookdale Rd. passed away peacefully on Sunday, December 8, 2019. He was 97 years old. He was born in Pennsylvania and lived his life as a young man in Agawam, MA.
Mr. Sasson is preceded in death by his wife of 64 years, Hilda E. Anderson Sasson; his mother, Evaline Harris Sasson McGowan; stepfather, Henry L. McGowan; father, Ralph Sasson; sister Helen Overstreet; son Richard S. Sasson, and infant daughter, Denise Ann Sasson.
He is survived by his loving children, John H. Sasson, Jr. (wife Carolyn Usher); Dianne Sasson Yost (Stan), Robert Sasson (Susan); and Ann Marie Gailius (Michael); as well as his sisters Dawn Dove, Virginia Anstead, and Lianne Sasson. Mr. Sasson’s family includes his grandchildren Curtis J. Sasson (Bethany); Bree V. Sasson (Steve Stuart-Doig), Elizabeth A. Yost, Kevin E. Gailius, Samantha L. Gailius (fiancé Patrick O’Leary) and Paul Pucciariello, as well as three great grandchildren, Teagan, Ainsley and Chase Sasson and nieces, nephews and cousins.
As one of the members of the Nation’s Greatest Generation, Mr. Sasson served in World War II as a Staff Sergeant in the U. S. Army Airforce. He is a Purple Heart and Silver Cluster recipient having survived a plane crash in England following a bomb raid over Keil, Germany.
Mr. Sasson was an avid fisherman, sailor, wood craftsman, and spent many days enjoying his family’s summer cottage in Connecticut. He was affiliated with the Woodside Kiwanis, American Legion Glen Cove Post 76, Sea Cliff Yacht Club (Past Commodore), and the Disabled American Veterans.
The family welcomed visitors on December 11, 2019 at Whitting Funeral Home in Glen Head, NY. A full military honors service was held at the graveside for Mr. Sasson on December 12, 2019 at the Brookville Cemetery.
